Greece. Farmers roadblock at Malgara Toll station
Greek farmers escalated nationwide protests on Tuesday by blocking traffic at the Malgara tolls, a key transit point outside Thessaloniki, using tractors and farm vehicles to bring movement to a standstill. The blockade, one of several across the country, disrupted travel along the main route connecting northern Greece with the rest of the mainland.
Farmers say rising fuel prices, high production costs, low commodity prices, and mounting debt have made farming increasingly unsustainable. Many argue that current subsidies and government support measures fail to cover basic expenses, forcing smaller producers to abandon their land.
Demonstrators gathered along the highway, holding banners and Greek flags, while police monitored the protest and diverted traffic. Similar actions have been reported in central and southern Greece, as farmers coordinate pressure on the government ahead of planned negotiations.
The Malgara protest reflects growing frustration within Greece’s agricultural sector, as farmers warn that without immediate relief, food production and rural communities face an uncertain future.
