Lamu: Between Swahili Tradition and Tourism on Kenya's Ancient Island

LAMU, KENYA — Residents and visitors move through the narrow streets of Lamu, a UNESCO World Heritage Site on Kenya's northern coast. With almost no cars on the island, transportation relies primarily on donkeys, boats and motorbikes. One of the oldest and best-preserved Swahili settlements in East Africa, Lamu today balances centuries-old traditions, religious customs and a growing tourism industry.
