Massimo Scognamiglio’s Archive Photographs Revisit A November 2017 Journey Aboard The Aquarius, Documenting Rescue, Waiting And Disembarkation In The Central Mediterranean.
Open Google Maps and move south until the roads disappear and only the Mediterranean remains. In Look at the Sea on Google Maps, photographer Massimo Scognamiglio asks viewers to look beyond the abstract image of a blue expanse and confront the human realities unfolding across it.
Photographed in November 2017, the archive series follows life aboard the rescue vessel Aquarius in the central Mediterranean. Scognamiglio spent a week aboard the ship, documenting the passage between rescue and disembarkation: exhaustion, medical care, waiting, uncertainty and moments of relief.
During this period, the Aquarius took part in a series of rescue operations off Libya before heading toward Italy. The photographs record not only an emergency at sea, but the suspended time experienced by people whose journeys had already been marked by danger, violence and loss.
The project treats the Mediterranean as more than a route or a border. It is a place where political decisions become immediate physical realities, and where rescuers and survivors share a confined space while awaiting the next instruction, the next port and the possibility of safety.
Published today as an archival visual record, the work preserves a chapter of the Mediterranean migration crisis while asking a question that remains urgent: what do we see when we look at the sea?
