France – Students Demand Better School Conditions as Paris March Ends in Clashes
PARIS, FRANCE — OCTOBER 6, 2026
Students and supporters marched from Place de la République to Place de la Nation on Tuesday, demanding better conditions in French schools and expressing solidarity with a growing nationwide high-school protest movement.
The mobilization reflects frustration over teacher shortages, overcrowded classrooms, deteriorating buildings and unequal learning opportunities. Students are seeking greater investment in public education and concrete improvements to their study conditions.
Photographer Andrea Luis Hernandez, who covered the demonstration, said participants began gathering at République around 2 p.m. People climbed the monument, held placards and lit flares before the crowd moved towards Nation.
According to Hernandez, most of the march passed without significant vandalism. The atmosphere changed after the procession reached Place de la Nation, where police began charging at approximately 5:30 p.m. Hernandez said some protesters then threw stones.
Hernandez also reported witnessing people being struck by police, including photographers and legal observers. These statements represent the photographer’s eyewitness account
The photographs document the demonstration’s progression from crowded gathering points and protest placards to confrontations with riot police and assistance being given to a person amid the unrest.
