IERISSOS, GREECE — OCTOBER 9, 2026
Thousands gathered at the Cultural Centre park in Ierissos, Halkidiki, for a solidarity concert connecting opposition to mining at Skouries with demands for justice over the Tempi railway disaster.
Organised by the Ierissos Friends of the Environment Association and the local community, the event brought together music, environmental campaigning and remembrance. Participants called for the protection of the region’s environment and water resources, alongside truth and accountability for the 57 people killed when a passenger train and a freight train collided at Tempi on February 28, 2023.
The concert took place one day after Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis inaugurated the Skouries copper-gold mine. While the government presents the project as a source of investment and employment, opponents continue to raise concerns about its environmental impact.
The announced programme included Thanasis Papakonstantinou, Giannis Angelakas, Pavlos Pavlidis, Eirini Skylakaki, Giannis Haroulis, Natassa Bofiliou, Dimitris Mystakidis, Dimitris Apostolakis, Social Waste, Matoula Zamani and Andriana Achitzanova.
The photographs document performances, audience participation and clothing bearing messages linking Skouries and Tempi.
