TURIN, ITALY – OCTOBER 24, 2026: Thousands of demonstrators marched through Turin on Saturday against increased military spending and the rising cost of living, during a mobilisation marked by a heavy police presence, confrontations and the use of tear gas.
Protesters gathered in Piazza Castello, carrying flags, handmade placards and banners. The demonstration linked opposition to military spending with concerns over economic hardship, including fuel prices. Students and political activists were among those taking part.
Tensions developed as police blocked access to several streets in the city centre and directed the procession towards the northern districts. Julian Nelaj’s photographs show demonstrators facing closely packed lines of officers equipped with helmets, shields and batons.
Further confrontations occurred later in the northern part of the city. According to Italian news agencies, some demonstrators threw bottles and other objects, while police carried out charges and deployed tear gas. The procession eventually dispersed during the evening.
