URDA, SPAIN – OCTOBER 28, 2026: Emergency teams worked around severely damaged railway carriages near Urda, in Toledo province, after a collision between two high-speed trains killed at least 68 people on Wednesday, according to reports available that afternoon.
A Renfe AVE service travelling from Madrid to Seville struck an Iryo train that was stopped on the same route. Several carriages derailed, with wreckage coming to rest down the railway embankment.
Updated photographs by Dani West show the scale of the damage, emergency vehicles gathered below the tracks and responders working beside overturned carriages. They extend his earlier coverage of injured passengers receiving assistance.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez visited the emergency command post in Urda and pledged a full investigation into the circumstances of the collision.
Renfe activated its crisis management and victim-assistance arrangements, while the regional government mobilised its emergency response plan. Rail services on the Madrid–Andalusia high-speed line were interrupted.
The casualty figures remained provisional. The cause of the collision had not been conclusively established.
