Crowds Celebrate as Robert Francis Prevost Is Elected Pope Leo XIV
VATICAN CITY – MAY 8, 2025: Crowds celebrate in St Peter’s Square after white smoke rises from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel, signalling that the conclave has elected a new pope. Cardinal Protodeacon Dominique Mamberti later announces “Habemus Papam” from the central loggia of St Peter’s Basilica and reveals that Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost has been elected the 267th pope, taking the name Leo XIV. The newly elected pontiff then appears before the crowd and delivers his first greeting and apostolic blessing. Photos by Andrea Calandra / MedPress
