Wildfire Threatens Northern Thessaloniki as Firefighters Battle Flames in Oreokastro

Oreokastro, Thessaloniki, Greece - July 5, 2026. Firefighters battled a fast-moving wildfire in the Oreokastro municipality on the northwestern outskirts of Thessaloniki after flames spread rapidly through dry vegetation under strong winds. Thick smoke covered parts of the metropolitan area as firefighting aircraft, ground crews and volunteers worked through the night to contain the blaze.
The fire damaged industrial facilities and nearby vegetation, while precautionary evacuations were ordered in several settlements. The wildfire comes only days after another devastating blaze struck the wider Oreokastro area, highlighting the increasing wildfire risk across northern Greece during the summer fire season.
