KARBALA, IRAQ - August 4, 2026: Shiite Muslim pilgrims gather in the holy city of Karbala during the annual Arbaeen pilgrimage. Iraqi authorities said approximately 19 million visitors were expected to participate in one of the world's largest religious gatherings, marking the end of the 40-day mourning period following Ashura and commemorating the martyrdom of Imam Hussein ibn Ali, who was killed at the Battle of Karbala in 680 AD.
